“Mathematics and Global Survival” Teaching global issues through Mathematics

THE 2nd IDS ACTIVITY:

“Mathematics and Global Survival”

Teaching global issues through Mathematics

(In-House Activity)

[July 2021]

Activity was conducted with the aims to provide understanding of the critical problems, like drug addiction, poverty and illiteracy that the world is facing today with the help of Mathematics. During the activity students did comparative study with collected data, on the mentioned problems in India, Brazil and Zimbabwe. Students of class VII to VIII and IX were involved. They worked in three different groups, and collected data on poverty, illiteracy and drug addiction in India, Brazil and Zimbabwe. Due to pandemic school was closed for physical classes therefore students collected maximum data from online resources like online magazines, news paper, survey reports, and by using various e-resources available on internet.

“Schwartz, Richard H. who wrote an article on Mathematics and Global Survival; provide an awareness of critical issues facing the world today and finding its solution.  Few months back when I read this article, it motivated me to introduce and describe about it for my school students. Later we did it as British council IDS activity for the students of classes VII, VIII and IX to study mathematics and teach them how to solve mathematical problems related to current global issues”.

Though, it was a crucial time in the country due to COVID-19 infection. Many students were affected mentally, physically and emotionally as well. But still we somehow managed to reconnect with our students though online. To bring back the sheer ambience of school, we called on for an activity. It aimed at making the students realise the current scenario. Students were fully involved and enjoyed this activity by getting knowledge of mathematics and its uses for global issues like poverty, drug addiction and illiteracy e.t.c.

"Illiteracy is the root cause of poverty and drug addiction in India, Brazil and Zimbabwe" was a topic in which students had to conduct surveys and present the data mathematically through bar graph, histogram and pie charts etc. This was a challenging task for the students. During this COVID pandemic the students and the parents were facing a lot of challenges due to lock down and quarantine period. However, they accepted this challenge to explore the world's major global issues virtually through digital platform. Students of class VI, VII and VIII have given a message to the society regarding drug addiction and poverty through poster making presentation; in which they depicted the different causes of drug addiction in a creative way. Students of class IX warned the present and upcoming generation by the means of a healthy debate. They digitally showed the statistics by the use of bar graphs, histograms and pie charts. They also tried spreading awareness by the means of blogging and stepping into the world of blogs.

These students have got a lot of experience after participating in these activities which were held in the month of July. On comparing the data of these three countries, they realised that such important issues can be understood merely by the means of mathematics also.

All the students pulled up their socks with full enthusiasm. They had a true spirit of participation in them.
